What data tells us about the impact of Airbnb in Lisbon
In 2023, Lisbon witnessed its biggest housing crisis demonstrations in decades. Census data reveals that the city centre lost more than 20% of its residents between 2011 and 2021. At the same time, short-term accommodation like Airbnb continues to grow. This data-driven interactive scrolly-telling piece aims to present a detailed picture of the density of Airbnb accommodations in Lisbon and how it can correlate to the decline of the resident population and family households in the city centre. As it does so, it asks a central question: what can data tell us about the impact of Airbnb in the city of Lisbon? Project realised during the Data Journalism Training Program 2023/24 by DataNinja & EDJN.
